Umeå is a small university town in Västerbotten County, on the coast in central eastern Sweden. It covers an area of 33.46 sq km (12.9 sq mi) and has a population of 76,000.

Although Umeå dates back to the 16th century, most of the buildings in town dates to the late 19th century. This is because a big fire in 1888 built the town down, so most of the buildings in Umeå were rebuilt after that. The rebuilt town is a lush city of birch trees. There are some 3,000 birch trees in the city, leading it to be known in Sweden as Bj&oum;rkarnas Stad, or City of Birches.

Umeå experiences a subarctic climate that has been moderated somewhat by the Gulf Stream. July is the warmest month here, when the average high temperature rises to 20°C (68°F). Coldest months are January and February, when average low temperature drops to -11°C (12°F).

Visiting Umeå

There are regular flights to Umeå from Stockholm, Malmö, Gothenburg and Riga. There's an airport shuttle bus to the city, which is just 4 km away. The bus fare is 40 SEK.
