, the capital of Thurgau canton, is a small city in northern Switzerland. It covers 27.4 sq km (10.6 sq mi) and has a population of 23,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is located on the River Murg, to the west of Lake Constance, at 417 m (1,368 ft) above sea level.
The picturesque Old Town of Frauenfeld today has many well-preserved houses from its medieval past. Although the city traces its history to the late 12th century, when it grew out nof a small village, the area has been inhabited since Roman times, as evidenced by the discovery of graves and Roman ruins.
Frauenfeld was mentioned for the first time in 1246. Originally written as Vrowinvelt, it was the home of the knightly Hörigen family and other knightly families allied to the Habsburg (Austrian) throne. Apart from brief periods in its history, Frauenfeld was ruled by the Habsburg until 1460, when it was taken over by the Swiss Confederation.

Protestant Reformation of the 16th century resulting in the town alternatively appointing mayors to represent its two main denominations. The town built many of its historic buildings in the 17th and 18th century, including its castle and town hall.
Today the people of Frauenfeld mostly speak German as their mother tongue (83.3%) followed by Italian and Portuguese. 22.3% of its population are foreign nationals. 44.3% of the city's population are Protestants, mainly belonging to the Swiss Reformed Church, while 37.5% are Roman Catholics.
Frauenfeld today has ten buildings listed as Swiss heritage site of national significance. The Old Town area is included in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.
You can take a trin to Frauenfeld from Zürich. If coming by road, take the A1 expressway (E60) out of Zürich heading east until Exit 73, then continue on motorway 7 until Frauenfeld.
