Lake Thun (Thunersee), is a a picturesque lake surrounded by mountains in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. The lake takes its name from the city of Thun which lies on its northern shore.

Lake Thun covers 48.3 sq km. It measures 17.5 km (10.9 mi) in length and 3.5 km wide. Its maximum depth is 217 m (712 ft).

Lake Thun receives most of its water from Lake Brienz, which is located on a higher altitude. There are also numerous streams in the Oberland that flows into the lake.

Lake Thun is today a popular recreational destination. There are a number of water sports available here including sailing, windsurfing and water-skiing.

Sights & Attractions in Lake Thun

Aeschi
Village that serves as a base for cross-country skiing during winter.
Beatenberg
Village located high above Lake Thun with splendid views of the Bernese Alps.
Hilterfingen
Village on the northeastern shore of Lake Thun. It has a 19th century castle, Schloss Hüneg, built in the Neo-Renaissance style.
Niesen
2,362 m (7,750 ft) mountain in the Bernese Oberland overlooking Lake Thun. A funicular runs from Mülenen to the summit, offering fantastic views of the surroundings.
Oberhofen am Thunersee
Lakeside town with its medieval castle right on the lake front.
Spiez
Village with a medieval castle on a spur jutting into Lake Thun. Near the castle is a Romanesque church.
