Stans is a small town that serves as the capital of the canton of Nidwalden in central Switzerland. Located at an elevation of 452 m (1,483 ft), it covers 11.09 sq km (4.28 sq mi) and has a population of 8,000 people (2012 estimate).

Not only is Stans the capital of Nidwalden canton, it is also one of the oldest towns in the Nidwalden Valley. Evidence of human habitation here goes back to the 2nd century BC. The present town traces its history to its first mention in 1124. By the time the Swiss Confederation was formed, Stans was already serving as a district capital for Unterwalden nid dem Kernwald, which eventually became part of the canton of Nidwalden.

Today most of the people in Stans speak German as their mother tongue (91.6%), with Italian being the second most common language (2%).

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
