Stein am Rhein is a beautiful little town on the banks of the River Rhine in Schaffhausen canton, Switzerland. Situated 413 m (1,355 ft) above sea level, the town covers 6.06 sq km (2.34 sq mi) and has a population of 3,200 people (2011 estimate). Its name means "stone on the Rhine".

Stein am Rhein has a beautifull preserved medieval core. Although inhabited since Roman times, the present town was established by Emperor Henry II in AD 1007 when he relocated the Benedictine Abbey of St George there. A village developed there and became a prosperous little town by the 15th century.

Although it suffered from Allied bombings during World War II, Stein am Rhein has been well restored. Today its Old Town has numerous half-timbered houses with their façades painted with frescoes.
