Zurich is the capital of the Zurich canton. It has the largest airport and train station in the country. The city is regarded as a global city and one of the foremost financial centers of the world. Due to its attractive tax incentives, it attracts many overseas companies in setting up their headquaters there.

Zurich became a member of the Swiss Confederacy on 1 May, 1351. It was temporarily expelled from the confederacy between 1440 and 1450 when it was embroiled in a war with the other member states over the territory of Toggenburg.

Zurich is 408 m above sea level. It is nestled in a valley, on the northern end of Lake Zurich. Lindenhof, a small hill on the west bank of the Limmat river, is regarded as the geographic center of the city. Zurich experiences a humid continental climate. The coldest month is Zurich is January, when the average temperature drops to -0.5°C (31.1°F) while July is the warmest month, with an average temperature of 17.6°C (63.7°F).
