Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey & St Martin's Church are recognised as World Heritage Sites located in Canterbury, Kent, England. Collectively they are some of the oldest Christian buildings in the country.

Canterbury Cathedral, formally the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury, is regarded as one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who serves as the leader of the Church of England, and the symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The cathedral traces its history to St. Augustine of Canterbury, who was the abbot of St. Andrew's Benedictine Abbey in Rome before being sent by Pope Gregory the Great in AD 597 on a missionary to the Anglo-Saxons.

St Augustine's Abbey was the monastery founded by St Augustine upon his arrival in England in AD 597, at the permission of King Æthelberht, whose consort Queen Bertha has already converted to Christianity. The abbey dates back to the 11th century.

St Martin's Church in Canterbury holds the distinction of being the oldest parish church in continuous use in England. It was the private chapel of Queen Bertha of Kent in the 6th century before the arrival of St Augustine from Rome. Discoveries helped strengthen the belief that this church has been in used since the 6th century, with modifications and additions carried out in the 7th or 8th century.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
