Leeds is the largest city in West Yorkshire, England. The city has a population of 770,000 while the metropolitan area has a population of close to 3 million people. This makes Leeds the third biggest city as well as one of the fastest growing in the United Kingdom.

The name Leeds is said to have been derived from "Loidis", the name of the forest during the Kingdom of Elmet between the 5th and 7th centuries.

Leeds is today a major industrial city. The prosperity from the industrialization of Leeds since the Victorian age has made it a shopping venue since the 19th century. It has a number of beautifully ornate shopping arcades built during that time that have been restored and are still in use today. Shopping continues to be a major preoccupation of visitors to Leeds.

In addition to shopping, many visitors come to Leeds to enjoy its nightlife, museums and theatres. Its location makes it an ideal base for visiting the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Moors, Peak District, the ancient city of York and the historic spa town of Harrogate.

Going to Leeds

By Plane: You can fly to Leeds, arriving at the Bradford International Airport, which is 10 miles to the northwest of downtown. Jet2 is a budget airline that has its base in Leeds. From the airport, you can take bus 757 to downtown. The journey takes 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can also catch a cab.

By Train: The modern Leeds City Station is the railway station of the city. One of the biggest railway stations in the country, it receives trains from all the major cities in Britain. By Bus: National Express and MegaBus are two of the bus companies offering long-distance bus connections between London and Leeds.

Going around Leeds

It is quite possible to explore the sights in the city centre of Leeds on foot. The city is quite compact, so many of the sights are close together. For farther distances, you can take the bus or train managed by the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority.
