North West England is one of the nine official regions of England. It covers an area of 14,165 sq km (5,469 sq mi), and is the 6th largest region. It has a population of 6.9 million people (2011 estimate), making it the 3rd most populous region in England.

Within North West England are the two big cities of Manchester and Liverpool, both on the southern part of the region. In comparison the northern part of North West England is rural in character.

North West England is composed of six ceremonial counties, namely Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.

Manchester International Airport is the biggest airport in the region. The Manchester Piccadilly Station, the main railway station of Manchester, can be reached by train from the airport in 15 minutes.
