Peterborough is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, East of England. It covers 343.38 sq km (132.6 sq mi) and has a population of 173,000 people (2012 estimate).

Peterborough is located on the River Nene, about 48 km (30 miles) along the river from the North Sea. It is on a flat, low-lying plain, with some parts below sea level. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. There is clear evidence of Roman occupation in the area. The Romans established a fortified town, some 8 km (5 mi) to the west of the present city. Peterborough dates to the Anglo-Saxon period, when a monastery was established there. It evolved into present-day Peterborough Cathedral. The Diocese of Peterborough was created in 1541, and its city status dates to then.

Peterborough was a market town until the mid 19th century, when the arrival of the railway line (the Great Northern Railway) spurred its development into an industrial center. The availability of fine quality clay helped the city to become a major brick producer.

Today Peterborough is one of the four environment cities in the United Kingdom, with aspiration of being the country's environment capital. It has embarked on projects to promote healthier urban living. The city has a vibrant economy, and is home to a number of major companies including Thomas Cook and Pearl Assurance.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
