Portsmouth is the second biggest city in Hampshire, England. It is located on the south coast of England, some 103 km (64 mi) to the southwest of London. The city covers 40.25 sq km (15.5 sq mi) and has a population of 200,000 (2011 estimate) within a metropolitan area of some 450,000.

Most of Portsmouth is located on Portsea Island. The island is just 30 meters away from the mainland. It is the only major city in England to be located on an island. The city has a mild climate, due partly to its proximity to the sea. The warmest months are July and August, when average temperature may rise to 21.5°C (70.7°F) or more. February is the coldest month here, when average temperature may drop to 8.8°C (47.8°F).

Many visitors come to Portsmouth to appreciate its naval history. There are museums and sights relaged to this, such as the D-Day Museum and Historic Dockyard. There are also ancient forts here that are now open as tourist sights. One of the newer attractions of the city is Spinnaker Tower, a tower of cutting-edge design at the harbourfront.

Visiting Portsmouth, Britain

You can reach Portsmouth by taking the A3 road out of London. The road starts at London Bridge as Borough High Street, and continues all the way to Portswouth on the south coast.

You can also fly to Portsmouth, landing at Southampton Airport - though personally that would be impractical if you are in London. There are a number of ferry services between Portsmouth as ports in France and Spain including Saint-Malo, Cherbourg, Caen, Le Havre, and Bilbao.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
