Lisburn is the third largest city in Northern Ireland and the sixth largest on the island of Ireland. It is located on the River Lagan, to the southwest of Belfast. Lagan has a population of 71,000 (2011 estimate). It was granted city status by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002, on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee celebrations.

It is not known for sure how Lisburn got its name, but theories abound. The town was originally known as Lisnagarvy, and was first mentioned as Lisburn in 1662. The town is the birthplace of Ireland's linen industry, which is remembered today at the Irish Linen Centre at the Old Market Square.
