Newry is a city on the River Clanrye, on the southern part of Northern Ireland. Founded in 1144 when a Cistercian monastery was established there, it is one of the oldest towns in Northern Ireland. Newry received city status from Queen Elizabeth II in 2002, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. It is the fourth largest city in Northern Ireland, with a population of 27,000 (2011 estimate), and a metropolitan population (inclusive of Mourne) of around 90,000.

Although the history of Newry began with the founding of a Patrician monastery there in 1142, there is strong evidence of continuous habitation in the area going back to the 6th century. The 1142 monastery was destroyed by fire in 1162. When it was restored, it became a Cistercian monastery. It was later turned into a collegiate church in 1543, and then surrendered to the crown in 1548.

Modern-day Newry is a popular shopping destination, attracting shoppers from all over Ireland. The shopping centres of Newry are Buttercrane Centre and The Quays. The property prices at Newry has also risen substantially, in keeping with it becoming a more affluent town.
