Dundee received a Royal Burgh status in 1291. Its name comes from the Celtic word "dun" meaning fort, and the Gaelic "dè" meaning fire. It grew as a seport town until 1543, when the whole town was destroyed in the War of the Rough Wooing between Scotland and England. As it was burnt to the ground, the town had to be completely rebuilt. In 1651, the rebuilt town was also besieged, in the War of the Three Kingdoms, and in 1651, it was once again destroyed.

Despite the destruction inflicted on it, Dundee rebuilt itself each time. By the 19th century, it had become an industrial town producing everything from cheap textiles to whale oil and jute. Its industrial boom was further fueled by an influx of cheap workers, mostly Irish immigrants, and by the second half of the 19th century, the town had over sixty jute mills.

Dundee's jute industry eventually succumbed to overseas competition in the 20th century, primarily from cheaper production bases in Calcutta. This led to high unemployment in the city.

After the Second World War, the town successfully shifted to other industries, and by the later part of the 20th century, nbecame a center for microelectronics. Today the town of Dundee has been rejuvenated by a £300 million master plan that helped it improve on public facilities.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
