Caernarfon is a Royal town and port in Gwynedd, Wales. It is located on the southern bank of the Menai Strait overlooking the Isle of Anglesey, about 13.8 km (8.6 mi) from Bangor. Caernarfon was granted the status of Royal Borough by Queen Elizabeth in 1963, and in 1974 this was converted to Royal Town.

Caernarfon was back to Roman times, when some of the earliest fortifications were built there. The settlement was known as Kaerinarfon in 1221, when Llywelyn the Great granted a charter to the canons of Penmon priory. The village grew to become a town around Caernarfon Castle, which was built by Edward I of England in 1283, to replace a motte-and-bailey castle on that site.

The investitures of the Prince of Wales have been carried out at Caernarfon Castle since 1911, beginning with that for the future King Edward VII on 13 July of that year, and then the one for Prince Charles on 1 July, 1969. In 1955, Caernarfon ran for the title of Capital of Wales in a ballot among Welsh local authorities, but was heavily defeated by Cardiff, with only 11 votes compared to the latter's 136.

The most practical way to reach Caernarfon is to go by car on the A55 motorway. The nearest airport is Anglesey Airport, 24 miles away, while the nearest train station is in Bangor, 13.8 km away.
