Jalan Sultan Ismail was named after the 14th Sultan of Terengganu, the late Tuanku Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, who was the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1965 to 1970. The original Treacher Road runs from the junction of Jalan Ampang to the intersection of Jalan Bukit Bintang. It was extended to reach the intersection of Jalan Imbi in the 1960s, when the road was already translated as Jalan Treacher.

The original Broadrick Road runs from Jalan Kuching to the intersection of Jalan Ampang. It was named after Lieutenant Colonel Edward George Broadrick, who served as the British Resident of Selangor from 1910 to 1918.

The elevated tracks of the KL Monorail follows the course of Jalan Sultan Ismail starting from the intersection with Jalan Imbi to the intersection with Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
