Mews Cafe is a cafe at Muntri Mews. Occupying the grow floor of the boutique hotel, it offers indoor as well as alfresco dining. The cafe offers a stylish interpretation of local ambience, with "coffee shop"-style round tables and wooden chairs. Recently the owner Chris Ong invited me over to lunch to try it out their new menu.
Rather than offering its guests Western fare that is no different from other restaurants and bistros nearby, Mews Cafe strikes out in a decidedly different direction, to showcase local favourites. (Of course, for those who prefer to stay within their comfort zone, Western fare is available at Mews Cafe too.) So often, when Westerners taste local food, being new to our local tastebuds, they are unaware whether the food is as good as it should be.
In the case of Mews Cafe, I can assure you that the dishes served to me the other day are all absolutely delicious. We had Kerabu, Curry Mee, Jawa Mee, Nasi Lemak and Laksa Lemak. Each dish was "cooked to a kick", so to speak. There is no sparing the richness of the santan used, with all the freshest ingredients.
Our lunch started with Kerabu Bee Hoon, a popular Nyonya dish, is a spicy rice noodle salad garnished with prawns, diced chicken, coriander, beansprouts, shredded green mango, peanuts, gingerbud, lemongrass, red chilli, sweet onion and crisps.
Next was Helen's Curry Mee. This curry mee was named after one of Chris's business partners, whose family used to sell curry mee at Mount Erskine, has a rich curry santan broth with diced chicken, whole prawns, beancurd puffs, crispy soya skin, fishballs and beansprouts.
Then came Mew's Java Mee, the hotel's luxurious interpretation of another local favourite. This is a noodle dish with yellow noodles, prawns, diced chicken, hard-boiled eggs, beansprouts and bok choy in a sweet potato broth.
The next item to arrive was the Nasi Lemak, a popular Malay rice cooked with coconut milk. The nasi lemak or coconut rice was served with prawns in tamarind, Japanese mackerel, cucumber salad, hard-boiled egg and crisps.
How were two people supposed to demolish so much food? We asked the kitchen to segregate each dish into two smaller bowls, which were still so presentably brought back to our table.
As for dessert, we had Sago Gula Melaka, Mews Passion and Chai Crème Brûlée. The Sago Gula Melaka has a bowl-shaped pandan sago served with Gula Melaka syrup and sweet coconut cream. Next to it is the Chai Crème Brûlée, which is crè nrûlée infused with chai tea. And finally, the Mews Passion is a crumble comprising a base of fresh mangoes with a layer of banana emulsion over it, and topped with passionfruit mousse.
It truly was a lovely lunch. Thank you Mews Cafe for the invitation!
