Cross Street, Singapore

Start here
Cross Street is one of the streets in downtown Singapore. It runs from east to west. On the eastern end, it starts at the Cross Street Viaduct, which connects it with Shenton Way and Central Boulevard. The viaduct was built in 2009-2011 to through traffic on Shenton Way. Cross Street continues as a one-way street to end at the intersection with South Bridge Road, after which it continues as Upper Cross Street.

Cross Street is one of the older streets of Singapore. It has been around since the early part of the 19th century, and was part of the Jackson Plan of 1822, which parcelled the city by ethnic communities. Cross Street was at the western boundary of the original city. It was much shorter then than it is today, for it ended at the sea after Telok Ayer Street.

Over the decades, land reclamations have extended the length of Cross Street. By 1885, it reached Robinson Road. By the 1950's, it reached Shenton Way, after which subsequent land reclamation in the 21st century created the Marina Bay area from which extends Central Boulevard.
