Hong Lim Park was created in 1876
1, and was originally called Dunman Green. It was the first public garden in Singapore. In 1885, local businessman Cheang Hong Lim bought the land and donated it to the municipality. The park was subsequently renamed Hong Lim Green, and then Hong Lim Park. The park became the venue of election rallies during the 1950's and 1960's. As such, it was the apt choice for the Speakers' Corner which was created in September 2000.
Within the vicinity of Hong Lim Park is the Hong Lim Complex, Old Thong Chai Medical Institution and Great Eastern Centre.
