Old Airport Road Food Centre & Shopping Mall (GPS: 1.30824, 103.88582) is one of the older hawker centres in Singapore. The two storey hawker centre in Geylang was built in 1973. Since its early days, the ground floor is devoted to food stalls while the upper floor is occupied by stalls selling garments, watches and household necessities.

I remember visiting this hawker centre for the first time in 1978 with my eldest brother, when we went to Singapore for the Billy Graham evangelistic campaign.

2017 Visit

On my 2017 visit to Singapore, I happened to stay at a friend's apartment at Dakota Crescent, so the Old Airport Road Food Centre is a convenient place for me to find food. I visited it a number of times during this visit.

Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee 新美香卤面

28 July, 2017

The Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee stall is a very famous lor mee stall in Singapore. It operates at the Old Airport Road Food Centre. When I came to Singapore, my friend Stanley decided that we should meet up and have lunch here, but he warned me in advance that the wait can be as much as an hour.

Sure enough, when we arrived at the stall at 11:35am, there was already a queue. Stanley ordered the S$4 bowl. He had wanted to order the S$6 bowl with added ingredients, but the hawker told him she couldn't sell the S$6 bowl on that day, because she didn't have enough ingredients. So, S$4 it is.

While Stanley queued up, I took photographs of the long queue that lined up in front of the stall. It was so long that it had to curved to one side. We arrived at the head of the queue at 12:00 noon. Not one hour later, but 25 minutes.

One look at the lor mee told me that, in terms of ingredients, it is very different from the lor mee I enjoy in Penang. There's no chicken feet here.

So what's my verdict with regards Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee? The taste of the "lor4" 滷 is similar to the lor of my favourite lor mee stall in Penang, so I have no complains there, but for S$4, I found the lor mee lacking in ingredients. Much of it is just noodles, with only a bit of "liau33" 料 . Perhaps I might have changed my opinion if I had the chance to try the S$6 bowl (but that has to wait till I return to Singapore). The taste is not bad, but the amount of ingredients does not justified that long queue.

Hua Ji Xo Fish Head Bee Hoon Stall

26 July, 2017

I have just arrived in Singapore. After putting aside my luggage at my friend's apartment in Dakota Crescent, I crossed the road to the Old Airport Road Food Centre to catch a bite. The hawker centre is said to be famous, and yet I found myself walking round and round, unable to decide what to have. As it was my first day in Singapore, I do not want to be too adventurous and eat something that might upset my stomach.

In the end, I settled for the Sliced Fish Hor Fun at the Hua Ji Xo fish Head Bee Hoon stall. It was not too bad at all. For S$4.50, I get a large platter of hor fun with big chunks of fish. But it was not salty enough, so I had to boost up the taste with the green pickled chilli.

After my meal, I went to the upper floor of the complex. The last time I went up there was in 1978, which is thirty-nine years ago. It brings back memories of a time when I was much younger, but the stalls have not changed much in terms of merchandise. Basically, it's just cheap everyday items such as slippers and umbrellas. Take a look.

2011 Visit

I visited the Old Airport Road Food Centre with my wife on 7 July, 2011. We took the MRT there. At that time the Circle Line had newly opened. We had the Katong laksa, the Tiong Bahru Lor Mee and the oyster omelette.
