Yuan Wei Handmade Soon Kueh 源味手工笋粿 (GPS: 1.36669, 103.83949) is a food stall at Block 226F, Kebun Baru Food Centre, in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore. My friend Evonne brought me over to patronise it during my visit to Singapore. We woke up early in the morning, and took the train to Ang Mo Kio MRT Station, from where we continued by Bus 262 to reach here, in time for breakfast. This was such a memorable breakfast, I was very eager to describe it.

On arrival at the stall, I saw that a long queue had already formed in front of it. Obviously many of the locals in Ang Mo Kio enjoy the kueh here, and as I was about to discover, it would be adding another devotee - me!

Yuan Wei Handmade Soon Kueh stall specialises in making Soon Kueh and other Chinese traditional cakes. Many of these kueh are made on site. There are basins filled with fresh vegetables and steamer trays with kueh ready to be steamed. Yuan Wei stall makes three types of chye kueh, namely the Soon Kueh (which has a filling of chopped bamboo shoots), Kuchai Kueh (with chive filling) and Mangkuang Kueh (with chopped turnip filling). In addition, the stall also sells yam cakes and png kueh.

I love the Soon Kueh. I enjoyed the crunchiness of bamboo shoots that contrasts perfectly to the skin. Back home, my wife often makes the chive and turnip variety, but she has not done one with bamboo shoot filling. I have to share this discovery with her.

Available in transparent food trays are Hakka abacus beads stir-fried with minced pork, black fungus, Chinese dried mushrooms and dried prawns. We bought a pack of this. As it is stir-fried, it looked similar to the Singapore carrot cake which I also like very much.

This was a thoroughly satisfying start to my breakfast! If only I could eat more of it, but Evonne has arrange to show me other stuff to eat, so I had to leave room!
