Nakhon Pathom Province
is a province in the Central Region of Thailand. The provincial capital, Nakhon Pathom Town is about 56 km from Bangkok, located on the Tha Chin River, a tributary of the Chao Phraya River
. Today the urban sprawl of Bangkok has reached into Nakhon Pathom.
Nakhon Pathom Province is bordered by Suphanburi Province
to the north, Ayutthaya Province
to the northeast, Nonthaburi Province
to the east, Bangkok
to the southeast, Samut Sakhon Province
to the south, Ratchaburi Province
to the west, and Kanchanaburi Province
to the northwest.
Nakhon Pathom Province covers 2,168 sq km (837 sq mi) and has a population of 866,000 people. It ranks 65th in size and 26th in population. It is also the 8th most densely populated province in Thailand.
Nakhon Pathom is believed to be the cradle of Thai Buddhism. Its name comes from the Pali language, where Nagara Pathama
(as in the Malay, "negara pertama
") means "first city". According to archaeological excavation, it was the site where the Dvaravati Kingdom was established back in the 11th century.
To commemorate this, King Mongkut commissioned the construction of the Phra Pathom Chedi. Completed during the reign of King Chulalongkorn in 1870, it is today still the tallest stupa in the world, standing at a height of 127 meters (417 ft). It stands on the site of the first stupa dating to AD 675, or according to archaeological findings, around the 4th century.
