Wat Mai, SukhothaiWat Mai, Sukhothai (23 December, 2003)

Wat Mai (GPS: 17.0195, 99.70584; Thai: วัดใหม่ ) is a Thai Buddhist temple ruin within the Sukhothai Historical Park, in Sukhothai, Thailand. This is the first temple ruin that most visitors to the historical park will see, if they enter from the main entrance.

According to the interpretive plaque at Wat Mai, it is believed that this temple dates to the Ayutthaya period, that means, past the golden years of Sukhothai. Wat Mai has a viharn (or vihara, wihan; assembly hall) that sits on an elevated, split level base. There is a top level that is decorated with singha leg while a lower brick level with 5 chedis (stupas).

According to the 1908 book Travelling to Muang Phra Ruang by King Rama VI, His Majesty mentioned that Wat Mai was enclosed within a moat which is 56 meters wide and 120 meters long. The viharn sits on an elevated base which is 2 meters high, and has staircase leading up to it. The viharn is rectangular in shape, with porticoes on the east and west sides. The building has rectangular windows of mortar.
