Buôn Ma Thuột is surrounded by ethnic villages of the Ede and Mnong people. Within the city itself most of the people are ethnic Vietnamese. The name Buôn Ma Thuột means "village of the father of Thuột" in the Ede language while among the Mnong people, it is pronounced as Buôn Me Thuột.

Buôn Ma Thuột is instrumental in helping Vietnam become the second biggest coffee exporting nation after Brazil. Visitors to Buôn Ma Thuột may pay a visit to these plantations.
