It explains the history of China through words and pictures, and what a riot of pictures. Apart from the introduction, the book is divided into six sections. The sections are:

1. Prehistoric China
2. The "Three Dynasties" period
3. Unification and Expansion: The First Chinese Empires
4. Partition and Conflict: The Period of Division
5. Great Changes: The Tang-Song Transition
6. Late Imperial China: The Ming and Qing Dynasties

Chief consultant of this book is Dr John Makeham, a specialist in Chinese philosophy and Chinese intellectual history. He is supported by a bevy of contributors from various universities all over the world.

China has been an area of much interest to me, particularly the late Ming and early Qing periods, and this heavy tome is sure to provide me a much increased understanding of those periods.

Another supplement that comes with the book is the "Chronology of Chinese History", a pull-out that shows the history of China in chronological order begeinning from 1.7 million years before present time until 1949, when the People's Republic of China was established.
